Wooden buildings containing businesses (and perhaps residences) line Center Street in Machias, Maine. Among the merchants are a hardware store and a restaurant. Several figures (all men) are just visible standing or sitting on steps along the street; a group of four cluster together near the hardware store studying a slip of paper held by one. Cars in production in the 1930s sit parked at the curb on either side; in the distance, a horse is hitched outside a building whose sign reads "Allen & Co.". Although related views taken at the same time show wooden sidewalks in the town (e.g., LB2010.9.120248), these all appear to be made of masonry. The wide granite steps at left likely belong to the Machias Congregational Church.
