The Broadway Inn in Machias, Maine was orignally a farmhouse, a rambling wooden structure with multiple dormers and a large ell connecting it to a barn. It appears to be a popular spot; a number of cars sit in the driveway, guests appear in the shot at the front entrance and inside the screened porch, and other figures—perhaps guests and staff—stand near the entrance to the ell. This view is very similar to that shown in LB2010.9.120251, though made at a later time. The grounds are tidy and well kept; business appears to be brisk. A kitchen garden is visible beyond the opposite side of the house, and a row of second floor windows in the ell indicates the owners did some extensive renovation to add rooms. The paint on the elm trunks has faded in comparison to the earlier photo. (White or light-colored paint protects tree trunks from wide temperature fluctuations. It helps reduce bark cracking, and thus routes of entry for disease and pests. Dutch elm disease was newly identified in the U.S. around the time this photo was taken.) In both cases, it's summer, as the are covered in foliage.
