Offshore view of the twin lights of Martinicus Rock Light station, Maine. This is one of the most remote lighthouses on Maine's coast, 25 miles from Rockland at the entrance to Penobscot Bay. Two wooden towers were erected in 1827. These granite replacements were built in 1848, and updated in 1857 by Capt. W.B. Franklin. The north light was deactivated in 1924. The remaining light was automated in 1983. Image depicts the pair of lighthouses, each with an attached keeper's house, as well a boathouse and another outbuilding. All are connected by raised walkways. Matinicus Light is famous for the story of Abbie Burgess, who as a young girl maintained the light for several weeks while her father, the lighthouse keeper, was on the mainland. Winter storms prevented his timely return. See also LB2015.15.42
