Mount Desert Rock lighthouse is located on a small island more than 20 nautical miles south of Mount Desert Island, Maine. The light station was established in 1830. This tower was built by Capt. W.B.Franklin in 1847. Mount Desert Rock light is one of the most isolated and dangerous lights on the Maine coast. The last keepers were removed in 1977. The lighthouse, keepers house, a boat house and a fog bell tower stand on this rocky outcropping. The conical granite structure was one of a series of lighthouses in Maine designed by noted architect Alexander Parris. There is no public accesss. The College of the Atlantic uses the island as a whale watch station. See also LB2015.15.40, 52 & 59
