Whitehead Island Light was established in 1807; it is the 3rd oldest light in Maine. Whitehead Island lies in the Muscle Ridge Channel, the southwestern entrance to Penobscot Bay, Maine. This structure was built by Leut. W.B. Franklin in 1852, with design atributed to Alexander Parris. The light was automated in 1982. Sited at the southern point of the island, the lighthouse and adjoining keeper's house are set on the ledge back from the shore, with a smaller building nearer the water. Beyond the light a long, low barnlike building is seen.
