Boon Island Light, off the southern coast of Maine, near Cape Neddick, is the tallest lighthouse in both Maine and New England at 133 feet. A light was first establlished here in 1800. It and several successors were destroyed by storms. The present tower was built by Capt W.B. Franklin in 1855. The light was automated in 1980 following a storm that swept away all of the support buildings. The tower and its attached two story house sit at the point of the tiny island. There are also other smaller outbuilding near the base of the light as well as one detached at the right which has a boat ramp to the water line. At the left is a small conical roofed building which supports a fog bell.
