"Moose Island Quarry, Stonington Me. 43." Moose Island Quarry, Mine, Smokestacks, Industry, Harbor, Waterfront, Coast, Buildings, Sailboats, Rowboats View south from Stonington shoreline toward Moose Island and the Goss Granite Company quarrry, including its derricks, sheds, powerhouse and smokestack. In the foreground a small fishing sloop and rowing boat lie near shore. The Goss mine, which operated from the 1860s to the 1930s, was famous for its pink-hued stone and provided granite blocks and ornamentation for many major buildings and monuments in Boston, New York City and Washington D.C.
