Library and Church, W. Gouldsboro Me. 148.

Library and Church, W. Gouldsboro Me. Library, Church, Street Scene, Buildings, Wagon Fred Savage, an architect who designed a number of cottages on Mt. Desert Island, built the West Gouldsboro Library in 1907 on a design. It is an English style half -timbered building with stone. The stone work was done by Eric E. Soderholtz, a local craftsman who fashioned many pottery garden items also found on several Mt. Desert Island properties. Fundraising to build the West Gouldsboro Union Church began on July 12, 1888. The Ellsworth American reported that most of the lumber for the frame and covering was on hand. By November it was reported that the roof was shingled, the steeple finished, and the weather vane, a gift of John S. Emery, Esq., of Boston, in place. The woodwork in the interior of the building suggests ships carpenters were instrumental in construction. When standing at the back of the church looking up, one gets the sense of looking into the interior of a ship's hull. Pews were purchased in October 1890, and on August 27, 1892 the church was dedicated with great pomp and ceremony. The Maine Sea Coast Mission provided clergy throughout the years. Both buildings are on the National Register of Places. The library is open only in the summer, and the church holds services only two Sundays a year, in July and August.
