Crossing the Bar, Sunshine Me. 17.
Crossing the Bar, Sunshine Me. Sand Bar, Beach, Waterfront, Coast, Carriage, Buildings A horse-drawn vehicle is making its way across the Sunshine Bar in this early 20th-century photo. The Bar across the tide flats between Sunshine and Greenlaw Neck could be crossed only a few hours a day at low tide with firm footing by bumpy passage for vehicles. There was no regular transportation for students to the high school at Deer Isle. Students boarded in Deer Isle village. Access for a doctor was nearly impossible. In 1935 a causeway was built with state aid and volunteer local labor.
