Edgewater Inn, Sullivan Harbor, Me. 109k.

"Edgewater Inn, Sullivan Harbor, Me. 109k." Edgewater Inn, Hotel, Porch, People on Lawn, Flags Harvey Dunbar built this house in 1906 as a wedding present to his fiancee, Alice Blaisdell. Dunbar and his brothers were prominent local businessmen who operated granite quarries, cultivated blueberries, and owned thousands of acres of timberland in Sullivan, Sorrento, and Franklin. Notably, the brothers shipped granite to Wall Street. Harvey also owned a general and dry goods store in Sullivan at one point; this burned in ________. Dunbar acquired the land in the mid-1800s. While a patient at a hospital in Haverill, MA, Harvey met Alice, who worked there as a nurse. He enticed her to Maine with the promise of a new home to live in. Originally, the property was quite a bit larger than it is today, although it's still in the family. Their granddaughter, Betsy Wakefield and her husband Roger own and occupy the house, which Alice Dunbar ran as an inn during the 1930s (the photograph was most likely taken between 1930 and 1935) in an attempt to save the home from foreclosure during this bleak decade. Guest cabins were built later; the Wakefields still operate these today. --description courtesy of Betsy Wakefield, 2012
