Boat Wharf Stonington Me. 37a.
"Boat Wharf Stonington Me. 37a." Image looking west of the Boat Wharf in Stonington Harbor around 1915. Crotch Island's granite headlands and its numerous quarry derricks break the skyline in the distance, giving a sense of how important granite quarrying was to the economy of the town. Stonington's long boat wharf, located at the foot of Seabreeze Avenue, is fitted with several buildings and a wheeled hoist for transferring heavy loads. A three-masted vessel is docked on the far side, behind a building on the wharf. An early convertible automobile is parked on the wharf. At the left is a sardine factory of the North Lubec Manufacturing & Canning Company. Built in 1911, it was known for its large windows and modern conveniences for its employees. Many of its workers lived in small shacks on Clam City Road in East Stonington. In a little vignette at the lower left a man in a peapod reaches for the gunwhale of his sloop. [n.f.
