B. Lake - Noyes M.D. Res. Stonington Me. 82.

"B. Lake - Noyes M.D. Res. Stonington Me. 82." Image taken from below Main Street looking northeast at Dr. Benjamin Lake Noyes' residence, built in 1906. The Queen Anne- Colonial Revival structure built into the granite outcroppings stood high above a bend in the Main Street and visually dominated the business district and the view from the harbor. Spacious verandas on the first and second floors would have given occupants and their guests magnificent views south and east over the town, harbor, and the Deer Isle Thorofare. Born in 1870, Noyes was principally a physician and surgeon. Trained at Bowdoin's Medical College, he was among the first to use radiation to treat cancer. He was also an inventor, surveyor, musician, and known for his extensive knowledge of ornithology and zoology. He knew the printer's trade, having learned it from his father as a boy growing up in New Brunswick, Canada. Noyes was also an avid antiquarian and archivist who amassed a huge archive of genealogical and historical materials on the families of Deer Isle, Maine. He compiled the 43-volume "General History of Families of Deer Isle, Maine" before his death in 1945. The piles of cut granite may have been left along the beach to prevent erosion in storms and high tides, or perhaps for use in future building projects. Noyes' builders used cut granite to build the foundations and retaining walls of his house, as well as an unusual, angled, enclosed structure in front of the house. The fact that it has windows suggests it may have been some kind of shop. [n.f.
