Vinalhaven Crazy Quilt

Vinalhaven Crazy Quilt

Fabric crazy quilt with painted flowers and applique thread icons such as an anchor, flowers, a cross, and a fan.  The quilt does not have side bindings or a backing. Although the exact maker of this quilt is unknown, we have narrowed it down to the Morton family of Vinalhaven.  Herbert Henry Morton (1876-c.1947) worked in the Vinalhaven granite industry; and his wife Amanda Smith Morton (c. 1875-?) was descended from the Areys of Arey’s Harbor on Vinalhaven. Amanda’s father Willard Smith (1839-1919) was a seaman and her mother was Mary Cassandra Coombs (1841-1919). It is likely either Amanda or Mary sewed the quilt, which has an anchor applique.
