Onboard the 69' Schooner Yacht FENELLA
Onboard the 69' schooner yacht FENELLA owned by Col. W.B. Thompson who I think was a Brooklin summer resident. The photograph was taken on a trip to Mount Desert Island, Maine (Pretty Marsh is seen in the distance). Robert Palmer* built the schooner in Noank, Connecticut, in 1888. - Maynard Bray 2024. In this view we see a gentleman in a flat cap chatting with several ladies and possibly another gentleman at the stern of FENELLA with a clear view of her dinghy / lifeboat on its davits. FENELLA is boldly lettered on the back rest of its stern seating.* FENELLA was designed by Oswald Jackson and built by Robert Palmer & Sons, Noank, 1888. The Palmer family's shipbuilding and repair facility, in operation from the mid-19th century until 1914, was one of the most prominent on the east coast. It was incorporated under several names, including R. & J. Palmer, Robert Palmer & Sons, and Robert Palmer & Son Shipbuilding and Marine Railway, and experienced substantial growth in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in the production of utilitarian barges and floats.
