Lighting: Candlestick

Brass candlestick. One of a pair of gimbaled candlesticks from the ship GRACE ROSS, which used to sail out of Searsport, ME. In memory of George Leslie Hammons; he was born in Searsport and spent his boyhood there. The ship GRACE ROSS was built in 1858 for William H. Conner and John Gilmore Pendleton was her captain in 1859, sailing out of Searsport. The gimbals on these candlesticks from the ship rotate to ensure that the flaming wick always stays vertical as the ship heels and sways with the wind and waves.
