Motorized peapod / launch

18' x 5' x 2' wood motorized peapod made by William Upton at Milbridge, Maine in 1907. Original power, a two stroke "make and break" engine. Carvel hull. Powered by 2 hp Palmer marine engine. White exterior with green trim, gray deck and interior. Unlikely that the builder would have considered this a peapod as peapods were double ended rowing and sailing craft, rarely over 15' long. This boat was not a conversion. William Upton of Millbridge built the boat for Captain Frank B. Ingalls who was the keeper of the Egg Rock Light off Bar Harbor. He transferred to the St. Croix River Light known to locals as the Dochet Island Light and took the boat with him, then sold it as a lobster boat. Charles S. Livingstone found the boat in deteriorated condition on the St. Croix River around 1954. He restored it for family use on the St. Croix and, later, in Boston Harbor, and put a 6 h.p. Palmer in it.
