Textile, clothing: Chinese man's coat, rose with black border

This silk coat was made in China near the end of the Qing Dynasty. This is a man's coat with deep rose damask silk fabric with a plum blossom and bamboo pattern, both associated with longevity. The trim includes a wide black appliqued silk border with multicolored embroidered flowers, peacocks, and butterflies. Within the black trim is a second band of multicolored brocade trim with a flower, bird, and butterfly pattern on a pale sage green base. Sleeves have huan xiu, sleeve bands, of white silk embroidered with flowers and butterflies. Coat lining is cobalt tabby silk. Some minor repairs were made in black thread at the enclosure loops and side seam slit. Fabric and lining have significant bleaching and discoloration. After 1874, Captain Elbridge V. Lynam of Seal Harbor, Maine worked as a master mariner in the foreign trades. The coat measures 53.5" x 39".
