Lapstrake Rowboat by Southwest Harbor Boatworks
12'4" (l) x 50 1/2" (w) x 25" (h) wood lapstrake rowboat built c. 1950 by Southwest Harbor Boatworks for a summer home in Northeast Harbor on MDI. White exterior and interior, varnished wood seats. Credit line: Anonymous gift Roger Cheever is the representative for the Pierce family. This boat originally belonged to his mother Ellen Pierce Cheever and was used exclusively at the family's house in Northeast Harbor, ME. Ralph Stanlely researched who built the rowboat. He spoke to Jim Rich whom the donor's family thought had built the boat but Rich said he did not build a lap strake boat for the Pierce family. Ralph remembers Southwest Boat building 2 lap strake rowboats, one for the Pierce family and one for the Paine family. This agrees with family lore that whoever built this row boat also built a similar one for the Richard Paine family of Moose Island, ME.
