Passamaquoddy birchbark canoe

18'2.5" x 36" beam birch bark canoe made by Tom Francis of the Passamaquoddy Indians at Eastport, Maine in 1878. Francis made it for Stephen Thurston, who was for many years pastor of the First Congregational Church of Searsport. Mr. Thurston gave it to Stephen T. Whittier of Dennysville. Original cost: $25.00. This was a good month's pay in those days of a dollar a day. This canoe was fitted for a mast and sail, something that made sense for the light summer breezes of Searsport.
