Log of the ship STATE OF MAINE 1894-1895
Leather-bound logbook of the ship STATE OF MAINE from March 3, 1894-February 13, 1895 by "poor, lonesome, hearbroken fellow" Henry Griffin Curtis. The 216' ship STATE OF MAINE was built by E. Haggett & Co. in Damariscotta, Maine in 1878 and sailed by Searsport sea captains from 1878-1903. Ports of call: New York, Shanghai, Manila, and Boston. Cargo of hemp from Manila to Boston. Log unique for latitude and longitude equations written out and solved. First voyage after wife Emma Frances McClure's death on December 19, 1893, random notes about his blue moods; ugliness; anniversaries of her birthday, their wedding, and her death; the stewardess Mrs. Wing Sing; a sailor jumping overboard; and getting Irish potatos from St. Helena Island. Other ships spoken: INDIANA, SUSQUEHANNA, and others. Second half of log are accounts with crew and port expenses.
