Joab Black Mathematics Book

Mathematics exercise book owned by Captain Joab Black of Sedgwick, Maine. The book is handwritten with elaborate titles in multicolored ink for each exercise, accompanied by sample problems worked out. The exercises are focused on commercial problems like the addition and multiplication of various currencies and systems of measure, calculation of interest, and conversion of currency. Most of the book is written with English measurements, except for tables for the conversion of American dollars at the end. A few pages of this book were reused by Joab Black in 1813 to draft petitions to the Sedgwick's selectmen and record payments of taxes.
