Shadrach Watson Account Book

Account book kept by Shadrach Watson in Arundel and Sedgwick, Maine. The earliest entries are for labor and materials for constructing a garrison in York County in the 1730s. The majority of entries are for accounts with Watson's store, which he kept in both Arundel in the 1740s and 1750s, and Sedgwick (Naskeag) in the 1760s and 1770s. These record the sale of foodstuffs, including sugar, rum, coffee, pork, and meal; powder and shot; fabric, including cotton and silk crepe; indigo; timber; and cod fishing gear. There are also some accounts for the income from and maintenance of a sloop, which Watson employed on trips to Boston in the 1740s. This book also has several entries from Watson's nephew, Joab Black. Most of these are dated 1813 or 1814, and include notes on items lent and taxes owed, as well as Black's signature.
