Logbook of the bark EMMA C. LITCHFIELD

Logbook of the Rockland bark EMMA C. LITCHFIELD, documenting nearly two years of voyages between the New York, Georgia, and South America while under the command of Captain William S. Crockett. This log-book, kept by the unidentified first mate, is unusually detailed, containing notes on individual crew members, maintenance done at sea and in port, and the rate of loading cargo, in addition to standard records of weather, positions, and sail configurations. The log also contains accounts of several mutinies by individual sailors, all of which were eventually subdued by the mate and captain. This volume was later re-used as a scrapbook, and several pages are covered with newsclippings or collages of household furnishings cut from nineteenth century magazines.
