Journal of Edwin Mitchell, ship IVANHOE, 1866

Journal of Edwin Mitchell, ship IVANHOE, 1866, the first of two personal logs recorded by Edwin Mitchell of Belfast, Maine, aboard the ship IVANHOE, under command of Captain E.H. Harriman. He wrote the second journal (MS 8) on the passage from Chincha Islands, Peru, back to New York.  Entries record the life of a young man before the mast in the Cape Horn trade.  Watches, duties ashore and at sea, notes about the officers and crew, his pay, and personal activities such as mending, reading, and letter writing. Notes by author on flyleaf: IVANHOE was built at Belfast, Maine. Launched Sept 21, 1865. Departed Belfast for New York Nov 10, 1865. Sailed from New York for San Francisco Jan 26, 1866. Then sailed San Francisco to Callas [sic], from August to October 1866. From there to Chincha Islands, Peru, in October 1866. Edwin Mitchell appears to have sailed with her from Belfast in 1865 to Chincha Islands and back to New York in 1867. edit: Callas is probably Callao, Peru.
