James Snowman Account Book
Account book kept by James Snowman for transactions in the town of Penobscot, Maine. Most entries are for sales of imported goods, like tobacco, sugar, candles, corn, rum, and glassware. There are also entries for caulking and rigging local vessels, and for some ship supplies. Most entries by James Snowman date from the 1810s and 1820s. This account book was later reused, likely by Snowman's son in law, Nathaniel Perkins, to keep track of farm labor done for neighboring families. There are entries for shearing sheep, fencing, haying, moving stones, and similar tasks, dating from the 1840s to the 1860s.
