Abstract log of schooner C. Mathews, kept by Franklin Warren

Logbook of the half-brig C. MATHEWS, kept by Captain F. Warren in 1850 and 1860 covering voyages between Maine and and Cardenas and Matanzas, Cuba. The log is written in a pre-printed official log-book, meant to record weather and hydrographic observations. Warren instead filled the book with watercolor sketches of the C. MATHEWS at sea in various weather conditions, under different points of sail, passing well-known landmarks, and in port in Portland, Maine and in Cuba. Warren's drawings often contain details like a lighter loading sugar or a school of flying fish. The text is limited, but records the dynamics of the crew, including practical jokes played, as well as observations of the weather. F. Warren log-book for the brig C. MATHEWS of Searsport. Watercolors depicting most stages of the C. MATHEWS’s trip to Cuba in the 1850s. Mostly visual; some written entries with anecdotes of the crew and life aboard
