Clams and Pogies
From the Clams and Pogies account book: among the contents is listed Martha C. Gray Heath (May 6, 1846-February 7, 1902) of Brooksville, daughter of Josiah M. Gray and Sarah "Sally" Morey. Our Martha is listed in the 1850 and 1860 censuses/censusi as living with nuclear family in Brooksville. Dad dies in 1869, Mom in 1883. Martha lives with older sister Elizabeth C. Grindle and brother-in-law Rueben Grindle in Castine for 1870 and 1880 censuses. The jackpot is the 1870 census when she is listed as a 'clamer'. In the 1880, she is listed as sister-in-law with no profession. 1890 census does not exist, but in 1900 she is living in Castine with a niece, again no profession, but with the married name of Heath. Lorenzo Heath was a ropemaker in Castine, who fought in the CIvil War. Martha is receiving his government pension after his death in 1896.
