Tugboat SOMMERS N. SMITH

The steel hull, steam powered tugboat SOMMERS N. SMITH was built in Philadelphia in 1886-87 and worked in Rockland, Maine, for many years. In 1925 she was owned by Snow Marine Corp. In 1947 she was sold to New London, CT, and received a diesel engine. She later had many owners and different names. In 1957 she worked in Lake Michigan at the Mackinac Island bridge. She was still operating in 1973. Her dimensions at the time of construction were: 66.5 ft. length, 16 ft. beam, 7.16 ft. draft, 53 gross tons. This is a port broadside view with a figure on deck, c. 1935. It is a hand-colored photograph mounted on masonite.
