Steamboat GRACE MORGAN

GRACE MORGAN was a small steam tug piictured in front of the large steamboat GOV. BODWELL. Both appear to be trapped in heavy ice in Rockland Harbor, Maine, their home port, about 1900. The tug was built in 1890 at the Palmer yard in Noank, CT. GOV. BODWELL was launched May 27, 1892, from the Gilbert yard in Rockland. She ran from Rockland to Vinalhaven and Hurricane Island, until 1920, when she was sent to the longer run to Stonington and Swan's Island. BODWELL struck a ledge at Swan's Island on January 27, 1924. She was refloated and returned to Rockland for major repairs at Swan's yard. On March 23, 1931, she burned and sank in the harbor at Swan's Island. She was named for Joseph Robinson Bodwell, granite company owner and Governor of Maine for less than one year, when he died in late 1887.
