Steamboat CASTINE
CASTINE was small excursion steamer working for many years in the Bangor, Maine, to Rockland area. She was built at the Barbour yard in Brewer in 1889. Her service included Belfast, Camden, Islesboro, the Fox Islands, and Blue Hill. This picture shows her on the Penobscot River at Bangor, passing a four-masted schooner. Her career ended in 1935, when she struck a ledge in fog near Vinalhaven. Four people died and the ship broke up in wind and waves. CASTINE's dimensions were 71.1 ft. length overall, 14.5 ft. beam, 5 ft. draft and 69 gross tons..
