"Ocracoke Lighthouse, oldest in North Carolina, stand simply yet majestically in the village at the southern tip of the island on attractive grounds with liveoaks and cedars. U S Park Service Ranger Field Benton lives in the house on the grounds formerly used by the Life Saving Service and the Coast Guard. The lighthouse, painted solid white, and a landmark from any point in the village, was built in 1823 to replace one constructed in 1798 on nearby Shell Castle Island. It is 76 feet tall and shows a fixed white beam for 14 miles. [REF nf 04/1964 P. 24]
