Tall white lighthouse with a small block building at the base. Other buildings nearby. "Ocracoke Lighthouse, oldest in North Carolina, stand simply yet majestically in the village at the southern tip of the island on attractive grounds with liveoaks and cedars. U S Park Service Ranger Field Benton lives in the house on the grounds formerly used by the Life Saving Service and the Coast Guard. The lighthouse, painted solid white, and a landmark from any point in the village, was built in 1823 to replace one constructed in 1798 on nearby Shell Castle Island. It is 76 feet tall and shows a fixed white beam for 14 miles. [REF nf 04/1964 P. 24]
