Perry Greene sits with two of his Chinook dogs, Riki and Bering, at his home in Waldoboro. This photo was published in the July, 1949 edition of The American Legion Magazine on p. 52. Chinooks are a rare breed of sled dog known for their intelligence and gentleness. In 1940 Perry Greene started a kennel in Waldoboro, and for a couple decades was the only breeder of Chinooks. In 2013 there were only 800 Chinooks registered worldwide. Kosti Ruohomaa took photos of Perry’s Chinook dogs. Kosti’s photos were published in Stag, and the July, 1949 edition of The American Legion Magazine, and also posthumously in Down East Magazine in January, 1963.
