A young woman sits between two men as they lounge on Jones Beach off Long Island. Near them is a collection of beer bottles half-buried in the sand. In 1944, LIFE Magazine sent Kosti Ruohomaa to Jones Beach. He took photos of a diverse group enjoying the sun and sand. Jones Beach, an Island off Long Island, was made a state park in 1929, and to this day is a valued get-away spot for the population of New York City.
