Jones Beach off Long Island was the first public beach to have a large parking lot to accommodate the large numbers of New Yorkers. In 1944, LIFE Magazine sent Kosti Ruohomaa to Jones Beach. He took photos of a diverse group enjoying the sun and sand. Jones Beach, an Island off Long Island, was made a state park in 1929, and to this day is a valued get-away spot for the population of New York City.
