A little girl holds on to her protector as she faces the ocean waves on Jones Beach off Long Island. In 1944, LIFE Magazine sent Kosti Ruohomaa to Jones Beach. He took photos of a diverse group enjoying the sun and sand. Jones Beach, an Island off Long Island, was made a state park in 1929, and to this day is a valued get-away spot for the population of New York City.
