The Eastern Steamship wharf at Camden, Maine. The first wharf, seen in this photograph was totally destroyed by fire on August 1, 1924. Its replacement was begun that fall and finished in 1925. It burned in 1959 because the pilings were loose and considered a menace to navigation. It was the second wharf for the steamship lines that carried passengers and freight from Boston to Bangor with intermediate stops like Camden. The lines began operation in1833. Several different companies owned and operated the boats over the years. The last steamship trip left Camden on December 27, 1935.
