Untitled
Image of a group of young people playing cards. Visible in image: Four young women wearing skirts and blouses with puffed sleeves (which suggest the photo to have been taken in the 1890s, when such sleeves were fashionable) and a young man wearing a suit with white tie sit around a folding table holding hands of cards. A wooden box sits at the center of the table. The mood of the group appears jocular. Behind them stands a corner bookcase, the top of which is decorated with flowers under glass, ceramic dishes, pictures, a globe, and the head of a cherub (at left). A thermometer is mounted to the outside of the shelves at left, next to the potted plant. Among the many volumes on the shelves are a complete set of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels (top shelf, far left), the History of Weare, New Hampshire, 1735-1888 by William Little (bottom shelf, far left), and Rose Mather: A Tale of the War by Mary Jane Holmes (top of the bookcase, just to the right of the corner). The location in the photograph and the identity of the people it shows are presently unknown.
