Image of an accident aboard the schooner GEORGE A. MCFADDEN at the Donnell shipyard, Bath, Maine. Visible in image: Men stand on the deck of the four-masted schooner GEORGE A. MCFADDEN and survey the aftermath of an accident that occurred while the vessel was undergoing repairs. Stays were being removed from the foremast preparatory to its replacement when the mast broke and toppled backward, knocking other masts down with it. Two riggers were up in the crosstrees when it fell and rode the foremast down to the deck; one suffered serious injury but the other walked away. The others schooners moored around the MCFADDEN appear to have escaped damage in the accident. One, astern, is identifiable as the ANNA E. J. MORSE, homeport Portland, Maine. Photograph LB2009.13.407 shows another view of this accident. Information about this photograph courtesy Nathan Lipfert, Senior Curator, Maine Maritime Museum, Bath.
