Kennebec at E.S.S. Co. wharf, Popham
Image of the sidewheel steamboat KENNEBEC at the Boston boat wharf at Popham Beach, Maine. Visible in image: The side-wheeler KENNEBEC stops at Popham on her way up the Kennebec River. Passengers dot her decks, and a crowd of people has formed on the wharf, apparently waiting to board (as they are standing close to the gangway, all facing the steamer). A dory and a skiff are moored on the shore side of the steamboat landing. KENNEBEC was built in Bath, Maine for the Kennebec Steamship Company in 1889. The vessel was taken over by the Eastern Steamship Company when it was formed in 1901, as the Kennebec S.S. Co. was the first company to be absorbed into the Eastern conglomerate. KENNEBEC ran between Popham, Bath, and Gardiner, as well as making multiple weekly trips to Boston. She was sold out of Eastern S.S. Co. service in 1905.
