A skiff sits pulled up on a sandy beach at Square Pond. A small birch tree partially shades the upper edge of the beach. Beyond, the sunlit expanse of water stretches into the distance, where the far shore is visible. Square Pond lies roughly 30 miles north of Kittery near the western Maine border. The shallow pond covers 877 acres and feeds into Mousam lake to the south. Numerous cabins and cottages cluster along its 10.8 mile shoreline; it's a popular vacation and fishing spot.
