The Laughton House and Modern Cabins, Pemaquid Beach, Maine

Image of three single-story cabins, typical of such structures built for tourist use in the 1930s - 1950s, and a similar structure next door. As Maine's popularity as a summer destination increased, the simple, rustic camp cabin offered a more affordable option than the hotel for families on driving vacations, particularly in the post-WWII era. The associated Laughton House is a 19th-century house located near the historic Fort William Henry which may have been converted as an inn during th early 20th century. As often happened, and in this case, property owners expanded their lodging options by adding tourist cabins to their land.
