D&H Railroad Station, Whitehall, N.Y. 24.

View of an elaborate railroad passenger station and platform standing beside multiple tracks. The freight service afforded by the Saratoga & Rensselaer Railroad at Whitehall on Lake Champlain gave a huge boost to the area's existing ship building industry. The line also carried passengers from New York City up to the Adirondacks. The stylish station pictured here, built by the Delaware & Hudson Company, which took over from the S&R, was surely designed to enhance the tourist trade. In one fell swoop, the stone and shingled structure's tent-like roof shelters the platform as well as the building. The building is anchored by a substantial square tower with a tall hipped roof and finial. Assorted railroad workers and passengers wait on the platform amid empty baggage carts and milk cans. A tall signal stands in front, visible far down the tracks. This image is part of a series made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to New England or upstate New York. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street.
