A view of Vaughan House in Caribou, Maine with a horse drawn wagon parked in front of it. The Vaughan House was at one point the largest hotel in Arrostook County, boasting 75 well furnished rooms, 22 of which were "en suite with telephone connections and baths". It was owned and operated by Charles H. Merrill. Landlord Merrill, as he was referred to in an undated newspaper article was born in Utica, New York and educated in Lee, Maine. The hotel burned in 1905 and 1906 and was rebuilt each time. The name "Vaughan" was mispelled as "Vaughn" in the Eastern Illustrating title which appears on the glass plate negative and postacrds.
