The Lodge, Sunset Lodge and Camp, Damariscotta Lake, Jefferson, ME. 5.
Image of a long, single-story wooden camp building in a grove of young birch trees. In the last decades of the 19th century, Maine's many lakes and rivers were becoming known for their recreational attractions (fishing, boating, sightseeing) as well as for their beauty. This simple rustic sporting lodge was typical of many that sprouted up along the shores of unspoiled Maine lakes during that period and into the 20th century. The Eastern Company would make these images for tourists to send home or to keep as a souvenir once back home in the urban scene.
