Carlton Stores, West Newfield, ME. 2C.
Three 19th century frame buildings in a quiet village on a wide dirt street. A freestanding street marker is visible in the middle of the throughfare. Directional signs (with mile postings and the pointing finger graphic) at the street corner read: "E. Wakefield 5M/ Parsonfield 6M/ Limerick 7M/ Ossipee 10M/" and "Mirror Lake Farm." The larger, hipped-roof building bears the plaque ""Bayspring/107" with the Freemason's symbol, indicating the upper floor's use as a Masonic hall. The ground floor has projecting storefont bays surrounding a small entrance porch labeled "J.L. Carlton/ Groceries/ Blackstone Tobacco/ Tonic/ Candy" and advertisements for "Ice Cream" and "Coca Cola". The simple clapboard building next door, carrying "Sharples Tubular Cream Separators", reflects the presence of local dairy farming and processing. At the far right is a house with a shady front porch. In its shadows is a rocking bench, enhancing the quiet, lazy feeling of this summertime image.
