Fernald Hall, University of Maine, Orono, Maine B94

Image of Fernald Hall, a classroom building on the University of Maine campus in Orono, Maine. Constructed in 1868-1870, of bricks made with student help, and erected largely by students, "Chemical Hall", as it was originally known, held classrooms, a chemistry lab, and a library. Designed by Providence architect Alpheus C. Morse, it was the first structure built on the Orono campus. In 1896 it was renamed to honor Merritt C. Fernald, the first member of the faculty, and the second president of Maine State College. A sign in front of the building reads: "University of Maine/ The Summer Lunch Room/ New Cafeteria/ 11:45-12;45 Mon. - Fri.", suggesting a 1949 summer session on campus.
