Cottage at Weathervane, Readfield, Maine K10
Image is a picturesque view of what is likely Maranacook Lake, taken from the road. A tiny house by the shore and a tourist cottage stand on the lakeside of the road. Mature trees tower over the scene. The "Weathervane" was a restaurant and tourist cottage that catered to tourists en route in the region. Roadside eateries such as this sprang up along state routes before and after World War II, as American families hit the road in their automobiles seeking out summertime vacation spots. In time most of them were superceded by the interstates and their attendant services.
