Christian Science Church, Belfast, Maine
Christian Science Church, Belfast, Maine. Stone church on east side along Route # 1. Later converted to a residence. Merry Christmas mat attached to negative. The Presbyterian Trinity Reformed Church was established by the followers of Rev. William Vaughn in 1904 and a stone church was constructed on Searsport Avenue in East Belfast in 1907. Before coming to Belfast Rev. Vaughn's parish in New York City counted Teddy Roosevelt as one of its parishioners. The church was built by volunteers on the site of the original Congregation East Meeting House. At one point the congregation considered joining the Episcopal Diocese of Maine but never did. The Rev. Vaughn was a popular Belfast preacher and farmer, once cutting 50 cords of wood, by hand, in a single winter. After the death of Rev. Vaughn in 1940, the membership stagnated and shrank and in 1963 the church was sold to the Christian Scientists.
