G.T.R.R. Station, Gorham N.H. 113

Image sighting down multiple sets of railroad track, a passenger station, a caboose at the end of a train, and a freight house with mountains in the background. In the air is a puff of smoke from the engine, a hint that the train is pulling out. This image is part of a series made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to cover New England or upstate New York. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street. The Grand Trunk Railway station at Gorham was part of an important tourist stop at the northern gateway of New Hampshire's scenic White Mountains. The several track lines visible here reflect the stop's additional status as a major rail yard and repair center roughly halfway between Portland, ME, and Montreal. The railroad also played a significant role transporting timber.
