Grand Trunk R.R. Station, Gorham, N.H. 14X
Image showing railroad tracks, a passenger station and hotel with mountains in the background. This image is part of a series made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to cover New England or upstate New York. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street. The station at Gorham, a picturesque masonry structure with a curved, tent-like slate roof, and the stately hotel behind, were built and designed by the railroad company - previously known as the St. Lawrence & Atlantic, as special statements to attract tourist traffic. The Gorham stop, with its stylish station and the Alpine House hotel seen here, was a northern gateway to the White Mountains, opening this otherwise remote and rugge area to the tourist trade. A group of girls pose on the platform in dresses that suggest a ca. 1900 date.
